Neelakantha Bhanu
World's Fastest Human Calculator · Founder, Bhanzu
Neelakantha Bhanu Prakash holds 4 World Records, is a Gold Medallist at the Mental Calculation World Championship, and was named "the Usain Bolt of Mathematics" by BBC. After watching too many bright kids learn to dread math, he spent 6+ years researching why traditional tutoring patches symptoms instead of fixing them. Bhanzu is what he built in response: tutoring that rebuilds understanding, not just rescues homework.
Quick Self-Check
Does Your Child Need Math Tutoring?
A few honest signals every parent can check at the homework table — no diagnostic test required.
💬
Can your child explain math in their own words?
"We learned fractions are splitting things into equal pieces" = learning. "We did something with top and bottom numbers" = surviving. The first sign of a gap is a fuzzy explanation.
🤝
Correct with help, wrong alone?
This isn't an attention problem. It's a comprehension gap. They've absorbed the prompts, not the underlying logic — so the moment the support disappears, the answer does too.
🧊
Freezes when the problem looks different?
Can follow procedures step-by-step but can't handle a question phrased differently. They've memorised the steps without understanding the logic underneath them.
😟
Decided "I'm not a math person" before age 10?
That's not drama. It's a belief — and unless someone intervenes, it hardens into identity. The earlier this is reframed, the easier it is to undo.
None of these mean your child is permanently behind. They mean there's a gap between what they're being asked to do and what they currently understand. The right tutoring closes that gap.
Decision Framework
How to Choose the Right Math Tutoring
Eight factors that actually matter — ranked from most important to least. Use this as a checklist when comparing any tutoring option, including ours.
01
Teaching Methodology
Ask: "How do you introduce a new concept?" Definitions and formulas = traditional. Real-world scenarios and guided discovery = conceptual. Only one builds lasting understanding.
02
Curriculum & Structure
Reactive (tonight's homework) has its place. But a structured curriculum that diagnoses gaps, fills foundations, and builds forward prevents problems instead of chasing them.
03
Teacher Quality & Training
A college student earning extra cash ≠ a trained math educator. Ask how teachers are selected and trained. Bhanzu: top 2% acceptance rate, 100K+ hours of methodology training.
04
Student-Teacher Ratio
Research shows 1:3 to 1:5 often produces better outcomes than 1:1 — children learn from hearing each other's questions. 1:30 is a classroom, not tutoring.
05
Technology & Tools
AI practice, interactive whiteboards, adaptive learning — valuable supplements. Not substitutes for a live human who reads faces and adjusts in real time.
06
Progress Measurement
"Completed Level 4" = useless. "Understands fractions as parts of a whole, building confidence with unlike denominators" = actionable. We measure baseline understanding, knowledge checks, and learning insights.
07
Engagement & Motivation
If your child dreads tutoring, the tutoring is failing — regardless of what the reports say. Engagement is the leading indicator. Everything else lags it.
08
Cost
Free (Khan Academy, limited interaction) to $275/hour (premium private tutors). Bhanzu: structured small-group tutoring at a fraction of 1:1 rates.
The Bhanzu Method
How Bhanzu Math Tutoring Works
Not a tutor marketplace. A structured, research-backed math program with four moving parts that work together.
Step 01
Diagnostic First
Every student starts with an assessment that reveals their actual comprehension level. A 5th grader "at grade level" may have fragile 3rd-grade place value understanding. We find the invisible gaps before we start teaching.
Step 02
Live, Concept-First Classes
Max 5 students per class. Every session opens with a scenario that makes your child want to learn the concept before it's formally introduced. Curiosity first, formulas second.
Step 03
AI-Powered Practice
Brain Gym between sessions: 15–20 minutes targeted at specific gaps. No worksheets. No busywork. Bhanzu Buddy is a doubt-solving tool that nudges your child toward the answer instead of handing it over.
Step 04
Transparent Reporting
After every session: what was learned, where strength showed, what's next. Not just numbers — insight into how your child thinks mathematically. You see the reasoning, not just the score.
A Real Class
What Happens in a Bhanzu Session
50 minutes. A 4th grader. Topic: fractions. Here's the minute-by-minute breakdown of how a Bhanzu class is built — so you can see exactly what your child experiences.
Min 1–8
The Hook
"Is this chocolate bar split fairly?"
Teacher shows a chocolate bar broken into unequal pieces. Students debate before the word "fraction" is mentioned. They're engaged before the lesson formally begins.
Min 8–20
The Discovery
Guided exploration
Folding paper, drawing on a shared whiteboard, testing different arrangements. The idea of "equal parts of a whole" emerges from the children's own work — not from a textbook definition.
Min 20–35
The Formalization
Notation as shorthand
Fraction notation is introduced as shorthand for something they already understand intuitively. When errors come up, the teacher reconnects the mistake to the chocolate bar model — not to a rule.
Min 35–45
The Application
Real-world problems
Sharing food, measuring ingredients, reading a ruler. 3–4 varied problems with individual teacher guidance. The concept gets stress-tested in contexts your child will actually meet.
Min 45–50
The Cliffhanger
"What if I added ½ and ⅓?"
The teacher leaves an open question for next class. Students walk away thinking — and come back curious. That's the difference between a lesson that ends and a lesson that lingers.
Format Question
Online vs. In-Person Math Tutoring
Three questions that determine whether online tutoring will work for your child — none of them is "is online as good as in-person?"
Question 01
Is it live?
Pre-recorded videos = content, not tutoring. Live and interactive = comparable to in-person. The format is irrelevant; the responsiveness is everything. Bhanzu classes are always live.
Question 02
Is the group small?
25 students online is as impersonal as 25 in-person. 5 students online is more individual attention than most physical centres provide. Group size matters far more than location.
Question 03
Is the child engaged?
Engagement depends on teacher and methodology, not medium. A teacher who opens with "imagine you're an architect building a bridge" captures attention anywhere — online or off.
Practical advantages of online
No commute. Access to top teachers regardless of location. Session recordings for review. Learning from the comfort of home — which often means a calmer, more focused child than the one who arrived flustered after a 25-minute drive.

The Bhanzu Difference
Why Bhanzu Tutoring Builds Lasting Understanding
Bhanzu isn't homework rescue. It's a full math curriculum — from UKG through Grade 9 — taught by trained educators in small live groups, where understanding compounds class after class instead of resetting every session.
💡
Concept-First
Why before what before how. Every topic starts with the reason it exists — not a procedure to memorise.
👥
Small Live Groups
Max 5 students per class. Tight enough for individual attention, big enough for kids to learn from each other's questions.
🌍
Real-Life Examples
Math connected to the world — not isolated computation drills. Tips, timing, distances, music, art, and finance.
📖
Story-Narrative Curriculum
Concepts land through stories. Kids remember the reasoning, not just the answer.
🌱
Growth Mindset
Curiosity is the default. Mistakes are part of learning, never a source of shame — even when a child gets it wrong twice.
🎥
Live Interactive Classes
Real-time quizzes, engaging teachers, and Bhanzu Buddy AI for between-class support — anytime your child is stuck.

Tutoring at Bhanzu has shown me how quickly children move from "I can't" to "let me try" once the foundation is built right. One of my students came in fast at arithmetic but lost on word problems — within weeks she was setting up equations herself and asking for harder ones.
KJ
Kripa Anna Jeevan
2 yrs 9 mos at Bhanzu
At Bhanzu, I've watched students click into a concept the moment they understood the logic underneath — one child finally understood why long division actually works instead of just memorising the steps. That moment a kid actually gets something never loses its impact.
AV
Ayswarya Vijayakumar
2 yrs 3 mos at Bhanzu
Sanjeevan from Malaysia became so confident in our sessions that he started tackling problems several grades ahead — entirely on his own. I've seen students move past their fear of math and start treating each problem like a puzzle, not a punishment.
RM
Rahul Menon
3 yrs 1 mo at Bhanzu
The most rewarding moment is watching a child reason through a problem they once called "impossible" — entirely on their own. Bhanzu's curriculum builds genuine mathematical thinking that holds up under pressure, not just under repetition.
SK
Sneha Krishnan
2 yrs 6 mos at Bhanzu
Watching reserved students transform into independent problem-solvers — comfortable with mental math, word problems, and even early algebra — is something I cherish. Bhanzu creates a space where mistakes are part of the learning process, never a source of shame.

FAQ
Math Tutoring FAQs
How is tutoring different from math classes?+
Tutoring reacts to what's gone wrong. Classes build something from the start. Most tutoring fixes the last chapter the child failed. A class like Bhanzu's 18-month programme rebuilds the foundation so future chapters don't break the same way.
How much does online math tutoring cost?+
In India, online math tutoring ranges from ₹400 to ₹1,500 per session depending on the platform and trainer quality. Full-term programmes like Bhanzu's Math Wizard work out to about ₹400 per session across 150 sessions, covering two grade levels of content.
How often should my child do tutoring?+
Twice a week is the sweet spot. One session isn't enough for the concept to settle. Four is too much to practise between. Two classes of 50 minutes, with practice in between, is what Bhanzu's programme runs on.
Can math tutoring help a gifted, bored child?+
Yes. Gifted kids don't need more practice. They need harder questions. A good programme shows them where the current topic leads (algebra, geometry, calculus) and lets them see the bigger picture. Without that, boredom turns into disengagement.
Is math tutoring worth it?+
If the tutoring builds foundations, yes. If it's just homework help, probably not. The test is simple: a year from now, can your child solve problems they've never been taught? That's the difference between tutoring that works and tutoring that doesn't.
Is online math tutoring as effective as in-person tutoring for kids?+
In many cases, yes — and sometimes more. Online platforms have tighter quality control, AI-monitored classrooms, and session recordings your child can revisit. The trade-off is screen time, which is why short focused sessions matter more than long ones.
How do I know if my child actually needs math tutoring?+
Watch the homework table. If your child guesses instead of reasoning, skips the steps they don't remember, or says "I'll do it later" to avoid it entirely, they need help. School is not going to catch this in time.
Can math tutoring help a child who hates math or has math anxiety?+
Yes, but only if the tutor understands the hate is about confidence, not ability. Most kids who "hate math" are actually kids who were never shown why it matters. Fix the why, and the anxiety fades faster than you'd expect.
How long does it take to see results from math tutoring?+
Confidence shifts usually show up within 4–6 weeks. Grade improvement follows around Month 3–6, because school exams test older topics first. Parents often notice the child enjoying math at home before the report card catches up.
Stop Patching. Start Building.
Your child doesn't need help with tonight's homework. They need a programme that makes tomorrow's homework unnecessary.
